To maintain this capitalist system in place—which in the end commodifies most people—the logic of slavery applies a racial hierarchy to this method. I created #BlackLivesMatter with Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi, two of my sisters, as a call to action for Black1 folks after seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin was posthumously placed on trial for his personal homicide and the killer, George Zimmerman, was not held accountable for the crime he dedicated. It was a response to the anti-Black racism that permeates our society and in addition, unfortunately, our actions. Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world the place Black lives are systematically and intentionally aidash ai venture targeted for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks’ contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of lethal oppression. We had been humbled when cultural staff, artists, designers, and techies supplied their labor and like to broaden #BlackLivesMatter beyond a social media hashtag. Opal, Patrisse, and I created the infrastructure for this movement project—moving the hashtag from social media to the streets.
